Assessment

Children in special education have an Individual Education Plan.  This enables teachers to target goals for pupils to achieve within a set time.  These goals may be Curriculum or skills based. The Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF), Digital Competence framework, WEST and Assessment for Learning (AfL) provide further feedback to pupils on their progress.

We use the B squared assessment package and have a continual focus on the progress that pupils make in their skills levels through the application of the principle of the Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF). WJEC Entry Pathways, Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST), Essential Skills and ASDAN are the packages we use at 14-19. We also use Salford reading tests.

When pupils reach the end of each academic year they are involved in teacher assessment tasks, which are administered by their class teacher in a sensitive manner. At the end of the Key Stage the results of these assessments inform the next steps in individual pupil learning. Pupils aged between 3-7 years are assessed using the Foundation Phase Compact Pupil Profile, Routemap, ‘P scales’, Digital Competence framework. Pupils aged 7 to 13 years are currently assessed via National curriculum, Routemap, ‘P scales’ The Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF) and Digital Competence framework.

At 14—16  pupils undergo ongoing testing as part of their ASDAN courses. The pupils are also assessed throughout the year through p scales, LNF and Digital Competence frameworks. Post 16 pupils sit controlled assessments as part of the Essential Skills Wales and PSD accreditation.

We use Read Write Inc in school which is a comprehensive approach to the acquisition of literacy through a phonics base which enables our pupils to make measured progress in literacy. The Read Write Inc. programme is for children learning to read. It enables children to become confident and fluent readers. Pupils discuss what they have read to show understanding and comprehension.
